Previous Employer Dispute

I am looking at some advice on how to handle a situation with a previous employer in an airline interview. I recently (last year) worked for a mortgage company that I left for another position and after I left I was in contact with a few of their customers. I disclosed to the customers that I had left my previous company and that I could refer them back or I could handle their loan. My previous employer was contacted by one of them and I received a cease and desist accusing me of "poaching" their customers. I did not sign any kind of non-compete while I was with them and I quit, I was not fired. I did not break any laws and I don’t believe I did anything unethical. However, I understand that when contacted by the airline they will find that I am not eligible for re-hire. I am wondering how to disclose this in the interview and if there is any way of defending my position. I am applying with regionals and while I know they need pilots badly, I have no intention of lying to them or even giving the appearance of hiding anything. I want to be able to sleep at night during ground school. Any advice is appreciated.
